It should be mentioned that the most comprehensive source on this program and medical insurance in Ohio is at insurance.ohio.gov. Let us start with identifying difference between medicaid and medicare. Medicaid is an assistance program for people with low income. It is funded by the states and government and consequently, benefits vary from one state to another. As for medicare program, it is a health insurance (federal one) for people who are 65 and older. People who are under 65 can also count on this program if they have permanent kidney failure that requires transplant or dialysis.

To be eligible for medicare you or your spouse should work for ten years (minimum) in employment covered by Medicare. Age requirements were discussed in the previous paragraph. As for enrollment in medicare in most cases it is automatic. If you receive social security disability income or if you have started to receive it prior to the age of 65 enrollment is automatic. In other cases you should apply to social security administration. People who are almost sixty have will have 7 months to enroll. The enrollment period starts prior to three months of the birthday and ends three months after you turn 65. If you are late to apply, you will have to wait for the next general enrollment period. It should also be mentioned that you may have a penalty about ten percent on premium (Part B) for each year you delay.
